LOT DETAILS

An extraordinary illustrative record of The World’s Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, held in 1893 to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the New World in 1492; the centerpiece of the Fair was held in Jackson Park and all the exhibits were spread over an area of 690 acres, which included the Midway Plaisance, attracting 46 countries and 27,300,000 visitors

This volume by B.S. Eldredge, Publisher and Bookseller of West Chester, was created for a readership who were not fortunate enough to have visited the Fair, with the aim to "present the work in so truthful a form as to preserve the Exposition in its artistic aspects in the mind of everyone who visited Chicago in 1893"; there are over 250 historically important photographs predominantly, with many interesting illustrations, including exposition figures, visitors, and events, which serve to create an inspiring "walk" through a time, 130 years ago, a truly remarkable collection; the Introduction was written by Halsey Cooley Ives (1847-1911) appointed in 1892, Head of the Art Department of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893; in fair condition with cloth and leather bound boards front and back but missing the spine cover of the book; all pages are in very good to excellent condition, image sizes generally around 20cm x 25cm (7 7/8 x 9 7/8in)
